Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”.

We took the family to the Experience Music Project and SciFi Museum in Seattle today. Better than I thought it would be. Paul Allen is a serious collector. What was neat was my 6 year old daughter picked out Princess Bride last weekend for movie night (her first viewing ) and we got to see a number of props and costumes from it today. All costumes are originals used in the films.

We were there a couple of years ago. It is small, but fun. They do have a lot of cool stuff.

Wait, that’s how big a borg cube is? Well damn, how are they even a little bit of a threat? if one shows up, just throw a medium sized cantalope at it and you’d be good.

We spent about 4 hours there. The kids spent a good amount of time in the sound lab. The Star Trek stuff was pretty damn cool.

The first cantaloupe would work fine, but then they would recalibrate their melon defenses and further cantaloupes would have no effect. So maybe you have a honeydew, or a musk melon. Maybe you break out the big guns and throw a watermelon. But pretty soon nothing works and you learn that resistance is fruitile.

Wow, very cool stuff. I’m jealous you got to hang out with a Dalek. If you like behind the scenes, you should read Cary Elwes’ As You Wish. Fun stories about casting, the cast, learning the sword fight, and how lovely a person Andre the Giant was.

I was allowed an hour of television a week when I was a kid, so I watched Star Trek. I blame it and Brent Spiner for my early dreams of going into the sciences.

:-)

Edit: thank you.

Happy to oblige. The exhibit was quite good. Touched on the production and cultural aspects and showed the props off well.

We went a few years ago and for me the sci-fi part was even cooler than the music exhibits. Some of those look new so it might be time to go again.

I was there two weeks ago. It's definitely worth the time. Here’s the good morning message I sent my wife in Atlanta the next morning:

Out of curiosity, may I ask what field you work in? Edit: I should explain why. I'm considering a second career in aerospace, and was looking to pick someone's brain.

I’m an engineer with a major airline. We develop repairs and mods for the aircraft.

Pick away.

I feel like not captioning Shaun’s shirt with “You’ve got red on you,” is a tragic missed opportunity.

Ugh, I was just in Seattle like 3 weeks ago and I’m so mad I didn’t make it over there! Cool stuff, I’ll have to make it a point go there on my next trip.

Sorry for the tardy reply. I was massively sleep deprived and wanted to wait until I could form a cogent question.

What is the state of advanced (bleeding edge) materials science research and development in the commercial aerospace industry? Is fundamental forward looking “blue skies” research being funded and supported or is that sort of R&D being deprioritized?
